Something's brewing in Europe
Written on 5.3.08
Possibly without reason, but I'm beginning to actually worry about the current state of affairs in Europe. Just yesterday I read an article about German and French schools mistaking capitalism for economics. Today I caught in the newspaper a small article revealing a study that close to 80% (this is from memory so feel free to correct me as I left the newspaper over the seat for someone else to read it) of the Portuguese would feel safer if their actions were monitored by video surveillance.
Now, I don't know about you, but I don't like these signs at all. First, teaching that capitalists eat babies (and small kittens) or that the government knows better and protects the common people sounds a lot like the line of thinking that got us in very deep trouble during the beginning of the XX century. And secondly, being under constant observation does not (and will not) lead to safety, else just ask the Mayor of London how he/they felt after the bombs went off and if video surveillance helped with anything. If the cream goes sour, what most people will get out of this surveillance thing is a free ticket to a gulag, due to not behaving in line with what the party (which ever) thinks they should.
